McDonald's Chaos: Knife-Wielding Man Forces Customers to Flee for Their Lives
In a terrifying incident at a McDonald's restaurant in Hanley, a 25-year-old man named Joel Lovatt, clad in a blue jacket but bare-chested underneath, terrorized diners with a Stanley knife and a pair of scissors. He was heavily intoxicated and engaged in a series of disturbing behaviors, including threatening customers with the blade, racially abusing a young woman, and telling a 16-year-old boy he would 'slash' him. The incident caused a stampede of terrified customers who fled the restaurant on Parliament Row.
The Stoke-on-Trent Crown Court heard that Lovatt's erratic behavior continued outside the restaurant. He approached the 16-year-old again, brandishing the weapons and reiterating his threat to cut him. The police were called, and Lovatt was arrested. He has now been jailed for 18 months.
Prosecutor Brian Williams described Lovatt's appearance at McDonald's on August 5, 2024, at 8 p.m. He was threatening people, appearing intoxicated, and behaving aggressively. He threatened customers with a Stanley knife, called a girl and her boyfriend the N-word, and threatened to slash the 16-year-old boy. Customers ran outside, and the manager was forced to intervene.
Recorder Robert Smith addressed Lovatt, emphasizing his bizarre behavior, including talking to himself and threatening random strangers with a knife. He also shouted racial abuse at a female customer, using a highly offensive term that has no place in civilized society. The court took a strong stance against such language.
Lovatt's heavy intoxication and erratic behavior, including his actions with two knives in a public place, were deemed inexcusable. The judge ordered the deprivation of the scissors, knife, and blades, and imposed an immediate custodial sentence, emphasizing the gravity of the situation and the need for swift action by the police.
