A tram crash in Milan has resulted in one fatality and dozens of injuries, drawing urgent responses from emergency crews.
Witnesses described the moment as terrifying. “I thought it was an earthquake,” one man told Ansa. “I was seated, then I fell to the floor along with the other passengers. It was awful.”
As the vehicle left its track, initial reports say it struck a traffic signal before crashing into the window of a nearby restaurant. A delivery rider waiting at the light and a young man on the sidewalk narrowly avoided harm, according to La Repubblica’s coverage.
Survivors recount how the impact unfolded. “I boarded at the first stop, Piazza della Repubblica,” a female passenger told Corriere della Sera. “I was standing beside the driver, and everyone collided into me.”
A nearby office worker, 27-year-old Anna, told AFP she heard a loud crash and saw part of the tram penetrating a shop front.
Civil protection teams have established a relief tent at the scene to assist those wounded.
Authorities have not released a definitive cause for the derailment. Early reports from various outlets indicate the tram may have navigated a sharp corner too quickly as it exited Viale Vittorio Veneto, but investigators have yet to confirm the precise factors that led to the incident.
