Six Nations Preview: Wales' Hawkins on Scotland's Centre Threat (2026)

Bold statement: Wales faces a Scotland attack well-tuned by recent experience, and the time to prove themselves is now. But here’s where it gets controversial: can Hawkins’ evolving midfield spark a Wales resurgence against a proven, compact Scotland trio?

Six Nations 2026: Hawkins keen to test Wales against Scotland’s Lions alumni

Hawkins returned to Wales with the Scarlets last year and earned starting duties against New Zealand and South Africa in the autumn internationals.

Following a selection decision over Cardiff’s Ben Thomas for the France clash last weekend, Hawkins lined up at international level between fly-half Dan Edwards and outside centre Eddie James for the first time.

The three of them, boasting a combined 23 caps, could now be stepping up to face a Scotland midfield that has gelled into a polished unit: Finn Russell at fly-half, Sione Tuipulotu at outside centre, and Huw Jones at inside centre.

This Scottish trio travelled with the British and Irish Lions to Australia last summer, forming the starting XV in the first Test, and they collectively bring 186 international appearances for Scotland.

France exposed Wales with their ball-in-hand threat and a stern defensive challenge is on the horizon once again.

“They’ve got a fairly settled centre partnership, so whoever gets the chance is facing a good test,” Hawkins said.

“Tuipulotu is a powerful ball carrier, but he also has subtle skills. Huw Jones has pace and clever running lines, so they complement each other well.”

The Glasgow duo could be matched up against a Scarlets pairing if Hawkins and James overcome Leeds-like competition from Ben Thomas and Owen Watkin, who has returned to fitness at the Ospreys.

James, 23 and 6ft 3in, showed early signs of promise with ball in hand against France.

“He returned from an off-season injury, and since coming back for the Scarlets he’s been genuinely physical in both carries and defence,” Hawkins noted, who previously partnered James for Wales Under-20s.

“Having a player like that in the team is inviting more ball to go his way.”

Wales conceded 15 tries and 102 points across the first two rounds, underscoring defensive work still to be done.

Yet Hawkins’ playmaking remains a crucial weapon for increasing Wales’ attacking options.

“We aim to be a team that excites the nation,” the centre commented, noting he even wore the number 10 jersey for the Scarlets earlier in the season.

“World’s top teams stick to their style; France doubles down on theirs and are among the best globally. After a couple of disappointing results, it’s not the moment to abandon what’s working or what will in time work for us. We just need to keep hammering away.”
